ETF Trends: ETF Performance Reports

It is worth keeping track of the best sectors + etf s with a view to weighting your portfolio towards the strongest sectors. Obviously this brings a risk of holding the most ' fashionable/ overvalued' shares. Hopefully a reasonable market overview + a bit of commonsense will help avoid the worst!

Usefull monthly reports @ etftrends.com
http://www.etftrends.com/etf_performance_reports/index.html

Bullish sector ETFs comparison - US basic materials

These ETFs are in strong uptrend.
They track the basic materials economic sector of the U.S equity market.

XME - metals + mining has the best recent performance but more volatility.
VAW has a 1.33% yield + good mix + low TER = 0.26%....? safest bet

Good Uptrends AMEC+ SGR Shaw

AMEC

AMEC
Perfect Uptrend - looks like I got out way too soon.
M Cap -Stg 2 B
Div 2 % P/Sales=0.62

UK based international project management and services company.
In global infrastructure/ environmental/ energy services areas.
Incl nuclear services.
Being re-organised for more profitability.
''strategy to make AMEC a leading supplier of high value consultancy, engineering
and project management services to the world's energy and industrial process markets."

Share buyback programme To date, 2.85 million shares have been bought in the
market to be held in treasury for a total cost of nearly #15 million. The board intends
that further buybacks should be made during the course of 2007.

Big institutions seem to be taking profits now though.

SGR Shaw Group

SGR Shaw serves similar global markets from US base.
Shaw has won Chinese contracts to design + build nuclear power stations.
Again sold too soon.

SGR v AMEC

Conclusions:
Both are in major uptrends
SGR looks more overstretched in short term
AMEC looks safer buy now
Both look good on a pullback

Monthly + Summer Trends

July/Aug are the traditional summer rally months in the US
US does better than UK over the summer generally.

June is the second worst month of the year for the US market
June has a 2:1 down: up record for the Dow
Exceptions were during the 1980s+ 1990s bull markets

May has seen DOW declines 55% of the time or has led
to declines in June or July.
The recent years have seen fewer declines though.

April has been the best month for the DOW up nearly 2:1
+ averaging 1.8% rise for the month.
April generally reverses the March trend - 2/3 of the time.
The first 2 weeks are generally better than the final 2 weeks in April
though both see rises - 1.2 % + 0.3% respectively.
The S&P behaves similarly - with a fraction less gains.

March is usually either neutral or slightlyhigher, often
leads into a market Top either in April or May.

The Dow in the month of March rose 36 times and declined 21 times.
There have been fewer declines in recent years.
The S&P 500 is similar - March is the fifth best performing month.

Nasdaq does worse in March:
Itranked as the third-from-the-bottom month since 1971
even though it had 22 ups and 14 downs.

February is the 2nd worst Month for the S&P 500
which averages a 1.7 % decline.
The DOW does a bit better - averages a 0.22 % gain +
tends to follow major trend.

The worst 6 months are from 1st May to 31 Oct for the US Markets
However there has been a memorial week rally c 80% of the time in
last 25 years. Some recommend Gold as an antidote to market weakness during this time.

Oil Services - OIH typically rally to may then decline over summer- most years

GILD + HUM in Healthcare look like best bets to me

GLA Galahad Gold & UMN Uramin

UMN trending up nicely.
GLA Galahad Gold is unchanged.

UMN is potentially a very large near term producer of
Ur with interests on several continents.

UMN is on a low valuation.
It has a big historic resource base of 236 million lbs of Ur.
It is capitalised @ 850 million Stg
Galahad Gold is a way of buying uramin at a discount.
Therefore put order in to buy more GLA

I believe GCL also owns UMN

Indicators - $CPCE--CBOE Equity Put /Call ratio

$CPCE--The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) equity put /call ratio

This indicates the sentiment of options traders.
Put buyers are betting that stocks will fall.
Call buyers are betting that stocks will rise.
Usually a contrarian indicator.

Every day, the CBOE adds together all of the call and put options that are traded
on all individual equities, as well as indices like the OEX, or S&P 100. They
calculate the ratio by dividing the volume of put option contracts by the
volume of call option contracts.

A reading of 0.80 is considered normal.

Like VIX Higher levels indicate fear, and lower levels indicate opposite.

A put call ratio around 1.0. is usually near a market bottom.

Most usefull @ extremes.
Buy when this is high - around 0.9 to 1

Timing trading + indicators 2

Think I mentioned this before -

The COT report - if the professional commercial traders
are net long of the market the odds are you should be too!

See .. nice blog + explanation of basic strategy.....
http://garyscommonsense.blogspot.com/
+
http://www.cftc.gov/

Timing trading + indicators

Noticed some interesting articles on when to buy.
It seems the end of the month is a good time to buy
possibly because fund managers buy more then.
The best days to buy appear to be.....
in order - 25, 26, 27, 24, 23 , 30, 31, 23,

Stocks should be above the 200 day MA
+ returns looked at are after 5 days.
Returns are likely to be better if the stock has
dropped for 2 days before buying.

Buy SGF Singapore Fd

The dilemma now is that summer is usually sell-off time
but the market is still in a strong uptrend.
Sell-offs are more likely to be buying opportunities
than breakdowns.

The widespread assumption that chinese stocks are in
major bubble territory does not stand up very well to
any closer examination so selloffs are buyable I think.
The prices on the local
Shanghai exchange seem to
heading towards over valuation but not the kind of over valuation
seen in the dotcom era- yet anyway.

DIM etf as buyout benificary

Looking at ways to benefit from the huge amount of buyout money /
private equity waiting in the wings. DIM etf contains a relatively
high % likely targets + has one of the smoothest uptrends + pays
dividends + is div weighted.

http://www.etfconnect.com/ gives a quick profile.

The Fund seeks to track the price and yield performance
of the WisdomTree International MidCap Dividend Index.

I would prefer to buy it on a pullback to the trendline but waiting
for that may be a mistake.

Above it is compared to EFA over 1 year.
DIM is the blue one!

PID is the closest other etf.
DIM has outperformed PID slightly.

UK Buys - Uranium/ Nuclear rel @ Share Centre

Putting all the uranium/ nuclear stocks together.
Some mentioned previously.
All small amounts at the ShareCentre

Buy UrAsia Energy @ 312.64

US Uranium/ Nuclear related buys

All fairly small buys. Some may be big winners + some may fail to do

well for different reasons - safer to have a basket of these stocks I think.

Shaw has a growing interest in Nuclear services incl a stake in Westinghouse

a major global builder/ designer of nuclear power plants.

Fronteer own a large portion of Aurora who have a lot of uranium in the proven category.

Bought small amount LGI
LAZARD GLOBAL TOTAL RETURN & Income Fund

Again intend to hold this + maybe buy more in longer term.
It holds mostly large cap dividend paying global blue
chips + also borrows to invest in currency contracts +
debt instruments. + It sells at a discount of c 8% to NAV

US Buy- ETW -E Vance Tax-Man Global Buy-Write Fund ETW

Bought Eaton Vance Tax-Managed Global Buy-Write
Opportunities Fund ETW. This is a defensive
long term buy. It holds mostly large cap
dividend paying blue chips + sells calls
against the stock it holds to generate extra
income + smooth out overall returns. It’s
expense ratio is just over 1% (ok) + trades at
a small premium to assets. The other funds that
use the Buy-Write technique trade at much larger
premiums to NAV with similar expense ratios.
eg S&P 500 Covered Call Fund Inc (BEP) trades at
a ridiculous 13% premium! The Enhanced S&P 500
Covered Call Fund (BEO) trades at a 7.3% premium
to NAV.ING GLobal Equity Dividend Premium (IGD)
trades at a 1.95% premium to NAV. BlackRock
Enhanced Equity Yield Fund, Inc. (EEF) trades
at an 8.25% premium to NAV.

2 Uranium buys

I don't know if the market is going to recover or go lower first so made
some buys that I am happy to keep if needs be. I have done a lot of
research recently on the uranium sector and made 2 small purchases
that should be good in the long term. Assuming no shock news I would
probably add more of these at lower prices if the selloff continues. I
think that if that market enters a bear phase that uranium will be one of
the few speculative winners + should outperform along with blue chip
defensive consumer staples type stocks.
