Monthly + Summer Trends

July/Aug are the traditional summer rally months in the US
US does better than UK over the summer generally.

June is the second worst month of the year for the US market
June has a 2:1 down: up record for the Dow
Exceptions were during the 1980s+ 1990s bull markets

May has seen DOW declines 55% of the time or has led
to declines in June or July.
The recent years have seen fewer declines though.

April has been the best month for the DOW up nearly 2:1
+ averaging 1.8% rise for the month.
April generally reverses the March trend - 2/3 of the time.
The first 2 weeks are generally better than the final 2 weeks in April
though both see rises - 1.2 % + 0.3% respectively.
The S&P behaves similarly - with a fraction less gains.

March is usually either neutral or slightlyhigher, often
leads into a market Top either in April or May.

The Dow in the month of March rose 36 times and declined 21 times.
There have been fewer declines in recent years.
The S&P 500 is similar - March is the fifth best performing month.

Nasdaq does worse in March:
Itranked as the third-from-the-bottom month since 1971
even though it had 22 ups and 14 downs.

February is the 2nd worst Month for the S&P 500
which averages a 1.7 % decline.
The DOW does a bit better - averages a 0.22 % gain +
tends to follow major trend.

The worst 6 months are from 1st May to 31 Oct for the US Markets
However there has been a memorial week rally c 80% of the time in
last 25 years. Some recommend Gold as an antidote to market weakness during this time.

Oil Services - OIH typically rally to may then decline over summer- most years

GILD + HUM in Healthcare look like best bets to me

GLA Galahad Gold & UMN Uramin

UMN trending up nicely.
GLA Galahad Gold is unchanged.

UMN is potentially a very large near term producer of
Ur with interests on several continents.

UMN is on a low valuation.
It has a big historic resource base of 236 million lbs of Ur.
It is capitalised @ 850 million Stg
Galahad Gold is a way of buying uramin at a discount.
Therefore put order in to buy more GLA

I believe GCL also owns UMN

Indicators - $CPCE--CBOE Equity Put /Call ratio

$CPCE--The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) equity put /call ratio

This indicates the sentiment of options traders.
Put buyers are betting that stocks will fall.
Call buyers are betting that stocks will rise.
Usually a contrarian indicator.

Every day, the CBOE adds together all of the call and put options that are traded
on all individual equities, as well as indices like the OEX, or S&P 100. They
calculate the ratio by dividing the volume of put option contracts by the
volume of call option contracts.

A reading of 0.80 is considered normal.

Like VIX Higher levels indicate fear, and lower levels indicate opposite.

A put call ratio around 1.0. is usually near a market bottom.

Most usefull @ extremes.
Buy when this is high - around 0.9 to 1

Timing trading + indicators 2

Think I mentioned this before -

The COT report - if the professional commercial traders
are net long of the market the odds are you should be too!

See .. nice blog + explanation of basic strategy.....
http://garyscommonsense.blogspot.com/
+
http://www.cftc.gov/

Timing trading + indicators

Noticed some interesting articles on when to buy.
It seems the end of the month is a good time to buy
possibly because fund managers buy more then.
The best days to buy appear to be.....
in order - 25, 26, 27, 24, 23 , 30, 31, 23,

Stocks should be above the 200 day MA
+ returns looked at are after 5 days.
Returns are likely to be better if the stock has
dropped for 2 days before buying.

Buy SGF Singapore Fd

The dilemma now is that summer is usually sell-off time
but the market is still in a strong uptrend.
Sell-offs are more likely to be buying opportunities
than breakdowns.

The widespread assumption that chinese stocks are in
major bubble territory does not stand up very well to
any closer examination so selloffs are buyable I think.
The prices on the local
Shanghai exchange seem to
heading towards over valuation but not the kind of over valuation
seen in the dotcom era- yet anyway.
